As my MSP, I am contacting you today to ask whether you will support the Calling Time campaign and include a commitment to bring an end to alcohol sponsorship of sport in Scotland in your party's 2026 manifesto.

Alcohol harm is one of Scotland’s most serious public health issues. 1,185 people died directly because of alcohol in 2024 and there were 32,301 alcohol-related hospital stays in 2023/24. 1 in 5 of us consume alcohol at hazardous or harmful levels. The harms experienced because of alcohol within homes and communities across Scotland are impossible to quantify, but everyone knows of someone who is suffering because of alcohol.

Exposure to alcohol marketing is associated with an increased consumption of alcohol and sports fans in Scotland are exposed to regular alcohol marketing at sporting events through sponsorship of teams, leagues, and clubs. Sport sponsorship allows alcohol brands to capitalise on the emotional connections that fans have with their teams.

The UK currently has a self-regulatory approach to alcohol marketing, designed by the alcohol industry itself, which is failing to protect people from harmful alcohol sponsorship and is contributing to Scotland’s alcohol harms.

In September 2025, Public Health Scotland published a review of the evidence on alcohol marketing and its influence on consumer attitudes and behaviours. This concluded that people are regularly exposed to alcohol marketing, that this increases consumption and that regulating marketing is an effective way to reduce consumption and therefore alcohol-related harm.

Research carried out in 2022 by the University of Stirling also found that Scottish Premiership football teams have a higher proportion of alcohol industry sponsors in comparison to other European countries (6.4% compared to 2.6%) and half of the teams have at least one alcohol industry main sponsor or partner. Countries with statutory controls have comparatively less alcohol sponsorship. I believe this demonstrates the effectiveness of taking action.
